英語類義語活用辞典の解説
legalとlegitimateはいずれも「合法の」という訳が当てられます。
共に「法律」を意味するラテン語が語源ですが、使い方には違いがあります。
legalは単に法律に関すること、または法律に違反していないことを言います。
The police and the lawyers are interested only in legal aspects of a problem.
（警察や弁護士は、問題の法的側面だけに関心がある）
legitimateは「正妻から生まれた」の意味に使われるのが特徴で、この意味で使われる場合に限り対義語がillegitimateになります。
legitimateは「正統の」「本格的な」の意味でも使われます。

（これぞ芸術家の仕事だ）
上の否定文はThis is no artist’s work.であり、illegitimateは絶対に使いません。
