英語類義語活用辞典の解説
legal と legitimate はいずれも「合法の」という訳が当てられます。
共に「法律」を意味するラテン語が語源ですが、使い方には違いがあります。
legal は単に法律に関すること、または法律に違反していないことを言います。

legitimate は「正妻から生まれた」の意味に使われるのが特徴で、この意味で使われる場合に限り対義語が illegitimate になります。
