英語類義語活用辞典の解説
この2つは、厳しい対処が予想される状況で、一般の基準より緩やかな態度に出ることを言います。
lenient は tolerant より無色な言葉で、対象にはオフィシャルな距離があります。また tolerant よりも、高い位置からものを言う言葉で、「寛容な態度で罰則に臨む」という含みがあります。
ただし、その寛容さは称賛されるものとは限りません。
The verdict was extremely lenient.
（判決は非常に寛大なものだった）※これは称賛している例
He lacks the capacity to make his own decisions because of his lenient upbringing.
（彼には決断力が欠けている。甘やかされて育てられたからだ）※非難している例
tolerantはtolerate（我慢してやる）の形容詞で、対象に気にくわないところがあるのを、我慢して怒声を発しない、といった意味での寛容です。
That man is repulsive. How can you tolerate him?
（あの男はイヤな感じだ。どうやって我慢してるんですか？）
You are extremely tolerant of him. How comes it?
（あなたは彼に対して非常に寛容だ。なぜですか？）
