英語類義語活用辞典の解説

explain explicate expoundはいずれも「説明する」「解明する」といった意味を持ちますが、入れ替えできないケースもあります。
 
explainはこの中で最も普遍的、常識的な言葉で、他人がわからないことを説明することです。つまりすでに存在する誰かの疑問に答える、対応するという含みがあります。これは他の2つにはない意味合いです。
 
1 We want you to explain your curious behavior at yesterday’s board meeting.
（昨日の重役会議でのあなたの妙な行動を説明してもらえますか）
 
2 No one can explain life; we have to take things as they come.
（人生を説明することは誰にもできない。起きることを受け入れるしかない）
 
3 I need no explanation from you. Your action speaks louder than your words.
（説明は必要ありません。言葉よりもあなたの行動を見れば明白です）
 
1と3のexplainとexplanationはself-justificationと同じです。つまりexplainはself-justification（正当化する）の意味に使われることが多いのです。「弁解がましい」というイメージがあります。
 

 
explicateはexplainより狭く、テクニカルな解明を意味します。また文学作品などの隠れた意味を解釈するといった学者的な用法をするのが特徴です。
 
What she is doing is to explicate the experience out of which these works were written.
（彼女は、これらの作品が書かれた根底にある経験を解明しようとしているのだ）
 
expoundは、他の2つの動詞よりも主張が強く、advocateの含みを持ちます。主張する内容も学問的、もしくは公的なものです。
 
The senator expounded the new tax bill to his constituency.
（上院議員は自分の選挙地区の人々に新税法案について力説した）
