factor と element は、いずれも複合物や物質の一つの分子または要素ですが、意味や用法には違いがあります。
 
factor は、ある特定の結果を生むに至った要因を指します。
 
つまり現象に対して下す個人の判断であることが多く、element のように科学的に立証はできません。
 
Her interest in people was a factor in her choice of journalism for career.
（他人への興味が、彼女がジャーナリズムを仕事にした大きな要因だ）
 

 
element は自然界の基本現象の一部といった意味合いが強く、the four elements は earth、water、air、fire のようにこれ以上分析できない構成分子を表します。
 
the elements は風雨のことです。
 
Are you going to brave the elements？
（この嵐に出かけるつもりですか？）
 
element は比喩的にも使われ、最も基本的な読み書きを教えるという意味で小学校を the elementary school といいます。

elements と複数にすると、一つの物質を構成する小分子の集まりという意味で generalization（概論）によく使います。
 
この場合、漠然としたものを指しているので定冠詞はつけません。

elementとfactorは区別できない場合もあり、どちらを使ってもOKなケースもあります。
 
大まかには、element は単なる一成分（ingredient）、factor は不可欠分子と考えて問題ありません。
