英語類義語活用辞典の解説
phaseとaspectはいずれも物事のある一面や側面を意味しますが、違いはあります。
phaseは科学的、客観的な根拠があるのに対し、aspectは発言者の主観に基づいています。
phaseの背後には「人間を含めたあらゆることは成長から終末に至るcycleがあり、変化していく」という思想があります。
この考え方は天文学の月と潮位の変化の観察から来ていて、phaseは時間的および視覚的（満ち欠け）どちらにも用いられます。
このcycle観は日本語にはありません。
As one grows, one goes through different phases of development.
（人間はいろんな段階を経て成長していく）
The water exists in the solid phase as ice, in the liquid phase as water and in the gaseous phase as vapor.
（水は固まると氷に、液体では水に、気体では蒸気として存在する）
上のphaseを言い換えるなら、stageよりもstateが適当です。
aspectはphaseよりも段階を意識せず、発言者の意図で物事をとりあげ、論じます。
I’ll take up that particular aspect of the economy.
（経済問題をその側面にしぼって考えてみます）
