英語類義語活用辞典の解説
mutual、reciprocalはいずれも感情、利益の相互関係を意志的に保つ意味を意味を持っていますが、交換不可な場合もあります。
reciprocalはa reciprocity treaty（互恵条約）など公的、オフィシャルに使われる語です。
reciprocalは、動詞reciprocateの形容詞である一方、mutualには動詞がありません。これは前者が行動を核にした言葉なのに対し、後者は感情や利益などが共生する状態が本質だからです。
She admires him intensely and he reciprocates her feelings with affection.
（彼女は彼を深く尊敬し、彼はその気持ちに愛情で応えている）
He hates you. The feelingis mutual.
（彼はあなたを嫌っている。それはお互い様だ）
mutualはreciprocalよりくだけた言葉で、日本語の”なあなあ主義”は a mutual administration society と表現できます。
Those two form a mutual administration society.

上の例文は単純に「仲がいい」という意味と皮肉を含む場合があります。
mutualのイディオム mutual friends(s)や mutual benefits などは reciprocal とは入れ替えできません。
