protect
間に防壁などの保護手段を設けて危険・危害から身を防ぐ。
shield
protect とほぼ同義だが、差し迫った危険・危害から身を守るというニュアンスがある。
defend
現実の攻撃を撃退しようと積極的に努力する。
guard, safeguard
安全を保つために警戒・監視を怠らない（格式ばった語）。
preserve
（人を）危害・危険から保護する（格式ばった語）

shield v
to protect or hide from harm or danger through defensive action

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
protect と shield は外部からの破壊・脅威などから対象を守り、保全を助ける意味を持ちますが、内容には違いがあり、入れ替えできないケースもあります。
shield は危険にさらされた者と加害者の間に割って入り、対象を救うことで、protect より直接的で緊急性があります。
He shielded his eyes with his hand from the glaring light.
（彼は手をかざしてまぶしい光を遮った）
protect はもっと一般的に、広い範囲に使われます。
He put her under his protective wing.
（彼は彼女を自身の庇護下に置いた）
shield が守るのは主に人間ですが、protect は動物や物も守る対象になります。
Cranes are protected in Japan.
（鶴は日本では保護鳥です）
His invention is protected by a patent.
（彼の発明は知的財産として保護されている）
The government protects home industry against foreign copetition by taxing imports.
（関税により政府は国内製品を外国製品との競争から守った）
以上3つの例はいずれも shield とは入れ替えられません。 shield が一時的な動作で具象的なのに対し、 protect は事前の処置により対象を守り、それが長く続く含みを持ちます。
