英語類義語活用辞典の解説

enemyは一般的な語で、自分に対して敵意を持つものや、自分のためにならない物事まで含まれます。
 
敵意の強さは、単なる嫌悪感から殺意に近いものまであります。
 
「ためにならない」という形容詞としてはinimical（もしくはharmful）を使います。
 
Drinking is inimical to clear thinking.
（飲酒は思考を妨げる）
 
foeはenemyほど守備範囲が広くなく、同時に感情的な言葉でもありません。
 
personalなわけでもなく、こちらに敵対するものを指します。
 
friends or foes（敵も味方も）というフレーズは詩・散文問わず使われる文学的表現です。
 
enemyから感情を抜いたのがfoeと言えます。
 
He is your arch enemy.
（彼は君の宿敵だ）
 
とはいいますが、arch foeとは言いません。
 
They are foes of your new plans.
（彼らはあなたの新企画に絶対反対だ）
 
このfoeは個人的感情は含みません。
