突然ですが、solidの意味を英語で説明してみてください。
なかなか難しくありませんか？
ロングマン英々辞典でsolidを調べてみたところ、「なるほどぉ～！（大声）」と目からウロコでした。

かたい
firm
物質の構成素が密で強く、押して変形しても復元する。中身が固くつまっていて、押してへこませたり、曲げたりできない。
hard
堅くて貫通・切断しにくい。
solid
中身が詰まって堅い。
tough
食肉などが堅い。
stiff
固くてなかなか曲がらな。
rigid
（物が）非常に固くて硬直し、折れるまで曲がらない（厳格さを暗示する）。
inflexble
曲げることができない。
inelastic
弾力がない。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
firm hard solidはいずれも「しっかりしている」点で共通しています。
「外圧に容易に崩されない」というわけですが、内包している感情には違いがあり、多くは入れ替えできません。この違いは反意語を考えるとわかりやすくなります。
firmはぶよぶよしている（flabby）の反対で、He has firm muscles.といった使い方をします。織物であればキメが粗い（loose）の反対がfirmになります。
firmは「健康、健全である」という意味も持ち、healthy、soundが同義語にあたります。
He is in his nineties, but his mind is still firm and his body quite sound.
（彼は90歳を過ぎても心身ともに壮健そのものだ）
You should know how much time you can afford for play. Don’t make appointments you can’t keep. Be firm about your schedule.
（娯楽に使える時間がどれほどあるのか。守れない約束はするな。自分の行動はしっかり管理しろ）
以上二つの例文のfirmはhardやsolidとは入れ替えできません。
hardを人間に使う場合、firmやsolidよりもずっとネガティブな含みを持ちます。
firmやsolidには「堅実な」といった意味がありますが、hardにはそれがなく、「厳しい、酷薄な」をいいます。
He is a hard man.は「彼は酷薄なところがある」であり、性質が冷たく、「優しさ」の逆であることを表しています。
He is a hard-headed businessman, a very hard man to sell.
（彼は抜け目ないビジネスマンだ。ものを売りつけるのは容易ではない）
These are hard facts.
（これが掛値のない事実だ）
solidはhollow（空洞）の反対、中が詰まっていることを指し、solid goldはメッキではなく全体が金でできていることを表します。
ちなみにsolid goldはこうした使い方もあります。
The man is in solid gold from head to foot.
（あの人は全身金でできている）
これはその人が億万長者である、もしくはその人の能力にすごい価値があることを表しています。
