この二つは状態・状況を表しますが、その内容は大きな違いがあります。
 
stateはconditionよりも精神面に関りの強い言葉です。
 
Happiness is a state of mind, not related to material conditions
（幸福とは心的状態で、物的事情とは関係ない）
 
状況、状態でもstateはconditionよりもスケールが大きく抽象度が強くなります。stateは一定の時期と場所に置ける存在（人間でも物事でも）の内容を示す言葉です。
 
state of the artというイディオムは学術・産業の最高水準を表し、ハイフンを入れて形容詞としても使われます。
