英語類義語活用辞典の解説
estimate assess appraiseはいずれも”見積もり”することですが、同じように使えないこともあります。
estimateは非専門語で、日常誰でも使う一般的な見積もりを指します。極端な正確性は要求されません。
We asked the carpenter to make a rough estimate of how long it will take to build a small additional room to the house.
（私たちは、小さな部屋を建て増すのにどれくらいの期間が必要か、簡単に見積もって欲しいと大工に頼んだ）
The carpenter estimated that it would take him just about three days.
（大工は三日ほどかかるとふんだ）
assessとappraiseは、正式の担当役人か、プロによる見積もりを意味する点は同じです。
違うのはappraiseが抽象性の強い、大きな言葉であるのに対し、assessは具体的な数字を出す点です。
My house has been assessed at ＄50.000.
assessは課税のために財産などの値踏みをするだけでなく、実際に課税することもいいます。
This year’s tax to be assessed on all retail sales was announced yesterday.
（小売業への今年の課税割合が昨日発表された）
assessにはanalyze（分析する）の意味もあります。
She soberly assessed her own work for elements of originality, if any.
（彼女は自分の仕事にオリジナリティがあるかどうか、醒めた目で分析してみた）
appraiseはappraiser（査定官）によって査定され、査定文書で示される。その額については、とやかく言えません。
appraiseは”オフィシャルな査定”という含みがあるので、一般的にはassessのほうが多く使われます。
