英語類義語活用辞典の解説

goods、commodities、ware はいずれも（売買される）品物を指しますが、wareには「器物」の概念があり、この点が goods や commodities とは違います。
 
ware は陶器類によく使われますが、比喩的な総称も表します。
 
Traders were displaying their wares.
（取引業者は売り物を展示していた）
 
hardware、 software、 silverware、 ironware、 leatherwareのように他の語と合わさって一つの語を作るのも ware の特徴のひとつです。
 
goods と commodities はとても似ていて、どちらを使ってもOKなケースが多いですが、goodsはcommodityよりも抽象的に商取引の物品を指します。
 
またgoodsは財産、commoditiesは消費の対象となる物品という区別があります。下の文のgoodsをcommoditiesに入れ替えることはできません。
 
He gave away most of his goods.
（彼は財産のほとんどを人にあげてしまった）

goods は英国英語では米語の freight にあたります。 a goods train（貨車）は米語で a freight です。
 
上の冠詞aはtrainについており、goodsにはついていません。原則としてgoods には冠詞や数字はつきません。
 
goodsの数を表したい場合は a piece of goods や three pieces of goods とします。
 
例外的にgoodsにtheがつく用法があり、それは to catch someone with the goods というスラングの場合だけで「現行犯で捕まえる」を意味します。
 
They caught him with the goods.
（逃れぬ証拠をつかんだ）
 
commodity は物品、特に儲けをもたらす商品を表し、個人の財産の意味はありません。家庭用品は household commodities です。
 
Whisky is one of the important comodities Scotland sells abroad.
