軍隊などで懲罰で位階を下げることを「降等」といい、英語はdegradeになり、民間ではdemoteが使われます。
 
degradeは世間の目から見て格が下がる、卑しくなる、もくしは「成り下がる」といった感覚を含んでいます。
 
degradeは本来他動詞で「成り下がらせる」「見下げたものにする」という使い方をします。
