英語類義語活用辞典の解説
free、liberate、emancipate は、束縛している何かから対象を解放することを表しますが、対象の種類には違いがあります。
free は解放する行為そのものに力点があり、対象は人でも、物でも、どんなにつまらないことでもOKです。
He helped her free her hair from bramble.
（彼は、バラの刺に引っかかった彼女の髪を外してやった）
He set out to free his workroom floor from the unspeakable clutter of books and papers that had accumulated over time.

liberate は自由になった結果の大きさに、またその解放感に力点があります。

これらの例文でわかるように、liberate は free よりワンクッション置いた、抽象性のある語です。
emancipate の対象は人間に限り、それも他人または伝統、風俗習慣などに隷属を強いられている人間を解放することに使う言葉です。
この場合「解放」とは自分の考えを自由に持つことを意味します。
an emancipated woman という言葉は、19世紀の低い社会的地位から解放された女性という意味だけでなく、もっと心理的に自由な女性の意味でfree spiritと似ています。
The war had an emancipating effect on women.
（戦争の結果、女性解放の機運が向いてきた）
