英語類義語活用辞典の解説
gameは様々な意味を持ち、
・冠詞を一切つけない
・定冠詞・不定冠詞をつけ、複数形にもなる
といった用法があります。
They hunt small game.での game は狩猟の対象になる動物、鳥類（狩猟シーズン以外は保護されている）のことで、集合名詞のため冠詞はつけません。small はライオンやトラなどのいわゆる猛獣と区別するためつけられます。
Customers in all these so-called discount stores are fair game for racketeers.
（いわゆるバーゲン専門店の客は、悪徳商人にとってはよいカモだ）
上の「カモ」を表すgameは一般的な集合名詞なので冠詞はつきません。
game は形容詞にもなり、willing や cooperative（好意的、強調的）の意味で使われます。
When I asked her whether she would join us in presenting our grievances to the head office, she said she was game if we were.
（本社に陳情文を出すメンバーに入る気はないか？と聞いてみたら、彼女は、私たちが入るなら入ってもよいといった）
gameがスポーツの用語として用いられる場合は、単数・複数になり、定冠詞をつけることもあります。
She plays a game of tennis every Sunday morning.
（彼女は日曜の朝にテニスを一試合やる）
I know the game he is playing.
（彼のたくらみはわかっている）
このgameは比喩的に使ったもので、strategy（策略）と同意です。
