gather

collect
通例、雑多なものの中から注意深く選んで整然と集める。
 
assemble
（特に人々を）特定の目的のために集める。
 
muster
（軍隊・船の乗組員を）検閲・点呼などのために招集する。
 
congregate
（人々を）特に集会に集める。
 
marshal
（人・事実などを）集めて整然と配置する。（格式ばった語）

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

gather、collect、assembleは、人や物を一か所に集める、または集まることです。
 
gatherとcollectはよく似ていてどちらも使えるケースが多いですが、違いはあります。
 
gatherは最も普遍的に使い、方々に散らばっているのをかき集める行為そのものに焦点があります。
 
対してcollectは何かの目的をもって物を集める選択に焦点があります。
 

 
つまりgatherは行為を意識し、collectは内容を意識しています。
 
Girls are gathering wild flowers.
（少女たちは野の花を摘んでいる）
 
He collects stamps.
（彼は切手を集めている）
 
gatherとcollectの違いは名詞にするとわかりやすくなります。
 
a gatheringは集会のことで、対してa collection of peopleは単なる人の集まりではなく「十人十色」といったvarietyに重点があります。
 
You have quite a collection of people at your office.というと、「あなたの会社にはいろんな人がいますね」の意になります。
 
金銭の貸しや税の取り立て、月給などを受け取る時はgatherではなくcollectを使います。
 
I must collect my salary today.
（今日は月給を受け取る日です）
 
assembleは目的意識がcollectよりさらに強くなります。
 
「部品などを集めて機械を作ったり、集会を催す」際に使うのはassembleであり、gather、collectは使えません。
