英語類義語使い分け辞典の解説
弁護士
lawyer
「弁護士」を表す一般的な語で、以下の語の代わりとして用いられる。
attorney
（米）「事務弁護士」で法律問題で依頼人の代理や仲介などをする弁護士。
barrister
（英）米国のcounselorに相当。
solicitor
（英）米国のattorneyに相当。
counselor
（米）「法廷弁護士」で上級裁判所などで弁護する資格を有する者。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
lawyer、attorney、barrister、solicitor は”弁護士”を表しますが、一般語である lawyer を除けば、それぞれ違った機能を持っています。
lawyer は solicitor もしくは barrister、またはこの両者の総称です。
solicitor は原告となる人、つまり訴訟人と連絡をとり、告訴内容を barrister のために作成します。solicitor は資料などを揃える裏方といえる役職で、法廷には立ちません。
英国系の法廷では barrister が正式の弁護人で法廷に立つ人、個人としては counsel と呼ばれます。
attorney は正確には attorney-at-law と呼ばれ、訴訟する人（原告）の代理人として法廷で発言します。
米語で attorney は弁護士の総称で、DA（district attorney）は prosecuting officer of a district（地方検事）のことです。アメリカのテレビや探偵小説によく登場します。
I have power of attorney（私は代行権限を依頼人からもらっています）という表現はよく知られた米語イディオムです。
