英語類義語活用辞典の解説

increaseとaugmentはいずれも「増やす」「増える」ですが、意味の詳細は微妙に違います。
 
augmentは現在すでに相当程度増えており、その上にさらに増大させることです。
 
このケースでincreaseを使っても間違いではありませんが、すでに数や量が多いのでやや違和感があります。
 
augmentの用例を挙げます。
 
The army was augmented by reinforcement.
（軍が増援を受けた）
 
A general augmentation of wealth and leisure account for the marked increase of consumption over the preceeding years.
