2 someone who gives information, esp. someone who gives details of their language, social customs, etc., to a person who is studying them.
informer
a person who informs against someone else, esp to the police in return for money.
英語類義語活用辞典の解説
informantとinformerはいずれもinformationの提供者で共通していますが、語の含みには大きな違いがあります。
informantは、ある国に生まれた人が、その国について書こうとしている外国人に頼まれて、必要や文化的、語学的知識を提供する人のことを指します。
外国人に限らず新聞社や新聞記者に、職業的に情報を提供する人もinformantです。
ニュース源としてのinformantは複数で表すことがあります。
informerは、法律を犯しているものを警察に内報するために雇われている人をいい、”裏切者”の代名詞のように使われます。
informerを人生の失敗者とするフローベルの言葉もあります。
