この二つが「冷たい」「涼しい」といった意味を持つのは言うまでもなく、「とても悪い（良い）」という表現で使われることも知られています。
 
coldは悪い意味、coolは良い意味で使われる場合が多いです。

この例文はつまり
 
Her performance was extremely dull.
（彼女の舞台は退屈そのものだった）
 
というわけで、coldは生気の抜けた死人を暗示しています。
 
対してcoolは快適な状態を意味します。
 
coolはoverheat（過熱）の反対であり、機械でも人でも過熱状態は調子が悪くなります。
 
そのためcoolはokayやall rightと同義に用いられるだけでなく、very nice, I like it very much.といった、より強い支持も表すのです。
