grief
ある特定の不幸・災難などから生じる大きな悲しみ（sorrowよりも激しいが、通例それよりも短期間の悲しみ）。
 
sorrow
喪失感・失望などから生じる深い心の痛み（最も一般的な語）。
 
sadness
特殊な原因または一般的な落胆などに起因する意気消沈。
 
woe
（文語・戯言）慰められない深い悲しみ・不幸

grief
great sorrow of feelings of suffering, esp. at the death of loved person
 
She went nearly mad with grief after the child died.
 
sorrow
unhapiness over loss or wrongdoing; sadness; grief

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

griefとsorrowはどちらも悲しみを感じることですが、その”深刻さ”には違いがあります。
 
sorrowはgriefに比べてかなり軽く、表面的な悲しさを指します。
 
He expressed his sorrow over the demise of her politician father.
（政治家だった彼女の父の死に対し、彼はおくやみを述べた）
 
She expressed her sorrow over the demise of the magazine she worked for.
（仕事をした雑誌が廃刊になり、彼女は遺憾の意を表した）
 
上の二つのsorrowはいずれもregretsとは入れ替え可能ですが、griefとは替えられません。
 
griefは内面的な、本当の悲しみを含む言葉だからです。
 
The lovers spent the whole day and night greiving over their imminient separation.
（別離が目前に迫り、恋人たちは昼夜嘆き悲しんだ）
 
greiveやgriefは心が本当に痛むことであり、それを外に表すかどうかは関係ありません。
 
He spent the whole night greiving oner the only chance he missed but gave no sign of it in the morning.
（唯一のチャンスを逃し、彼は一晩中悔しがったが、朝にはその素振りすら見せなかった）
