1 Compare disinterested and uninterested:
The argument should be settled by someone who is disinterested.（＝who will not gain personally by deciding in favour of one side or the other）

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

この二つの違いは、アメリカ人など英語を母語とする人の英語教育でも最も基本的かつ重要な内容のひとつなのだそうです。
 
いずれもinterested（関心がある）の否定形ですが、絶対に混同して使ってはいけない違いがあるのです。
 
disinterestedは利害関係を持たないゆえの「無関心」であり、問題について感情的になる必要がない立場に重点があります。
 
そのためdisinterestedは「無関心」よりも「公平」と訳したほうが適切な場面があります。
 
同義語ならimpartial、unprejudiced、unbiasedがあたります。
 
偏見がない、fair playのfairという含みもあるため、disinterestedは良い意味を持ちます。
 
対してuninterestedは対象に全く関心がなく、興味が無さすぎてあくびが出るほど退屈、という際に使います。
 
同義語ならbored、apathetic（無関心）が当たります。
