英語類義語活用辞典の解説

apprehension と anxiety はどちらも何かが気がかりな状態ですが、apprehension は「うまくいくかもしれない」という望みを持ちつつも、心配で落ち着かない気持ちをいいます。
 
The way he looks at her with such apprehension, he must be head over heels in love with her.
（彼女を見る心配そうな眼つきからして、彼は彼女にゾッコンのようだ）
 
対して anxiety は結果に楽観的でなく、むしろ悪い結果を予想した不安が強くなります。
 
I’m anxious about the results of the exams.
（試験の結果が心配だ）
 

 
“The Age of Anxiety”の anxiety は insecurity とほぼ同義で、「落ち着かない不安感のみなぎる時代」を意味します。
 
ただしanxious to のフレーズには、結果を何とかして自分の力で左右したいという積極面も持っています。「是が非でも」「躍起になる」といった日本語に近いニュアンスです。
 
He is anxious to show his intelligence.
（彼は自分の頭の良さを見せたがる）
