英語類義語活用辞典の解説

meltとthawはいずれも個体が液体に変わっていくプロセスを言いますが、そのプロセスに違いがあり、比喩として違う場合も同じではありません。
 
meltはthawより溶解度が高くかつ速やかで、「霧散する」という時にも使います。
 
溶かす対象も氷や凍ったものに限らないのがthawと違う点です。
 
one can determine the exact temperature at which each metal melts. Gold, for example, melts at 1945°F.
（各金属が溶ける温度はよく知られている。例えば金は華氏1945度で溶ける）
 
meltは”溶けない”場合でも使います。
 
「暑さでうだる」といったレトリックに使うのはmeltで、thawは使いません。
 
thawは主として氷の溶けていくプロセスで、最後には流れとなって流れ去るイメージです。溶ける速度もmeltよりもずっとゆっくりです。
 
比喩としてのthawは「緊張を和らげる・ほぐす」といった使い方をします。
