大リーグ中継を見ていると外野から直接キャッチャーに送球する場面などがあります。
日本では「強い肩」と表現されますが、英語では
strong arm
と表現されることが多いようです。
「肩」というより「腕」 英語の shoulder は日本語より場所が狭い
good strong arm
あるいは
great strong arm
と言うこともあります。
イチロー選手の「レーザービーム」などは典型的な「strong arm」ですね。
「肩」というと shoulder を連想するわけですが、日本語と同じ認識でよいのでしょうか？
いつものように arm と shoulder をロングマンで調べます。

対して shoulder は
shoulder

日本語の肩は腕の付け根の、筋肉が盛り上がるあたりを連想しますが、英語の shoulder はそれよりも首に近い部分、筋肉で言えば僧帽筋、「肩たたき」をする箇所を指すようですね。
確かにこの部分は、ボールを投げる動作には関わりません。
なので、英語では「強い肩」を shoulder ではなく arm で表現するわけですね。
