その中では「名誉を傷つける」の英訳に

を使っていました。

「名誉を…」の目的語を入れてしまいそうですが、defame 一語で相手を目的語にすればOKなんですね。

to sue a newspaper for defamation of character.
 
「フェアではない手段で」という含意があるのはキモではないでしょうか。
