英語類義語活用辞典の解説

この二つの語の違いは、それぞれの反意語を知るとわかりやすくなります。
 
antagonistic の反意語には
 
favorable　agreeable　compatible
 
があります。
つまりantagonistic は disagreeable もしくは incompatible の２つの意味を持つわけです。
 
Don’t be so antagonistic, we have to work this out together.
（そう何でも反対するな。これは協力して解決すべき問題だ）
 
Those two are natural antagonists. That couple will never get along.
（あの二人は相性が悪い。絶対にうまくいかない）
 
hostileは「相性が悪い」などと生易しいものではなく、強い敵意を持っている状態であり、反意語は friend もしくは friendly です。
 
antagonistic が相手の友好的でない「姿勢」を問題にするのに対し、hostile は相手の心にある敵意を問題にしており、その敵意を外部に表すかどうかは重要ではありません。
 
The intentions of the enemy are always hostile, never friendly.
（敵の意図は常にこちらを打倒することであり、友好的では決してない）
 
After the media-gossip about his extramarital love affairs, he had to face a hostile crowd in his election campaign.
（不倫スキャンダルのゴシップが報じられた後、彼は選挙キャンペーンで敵意に満ちた群衆を相手にしなくてはならなかった）
 
hostile が名詞になると、複数の形で war の意味を持つようになります。
 
The Arabs and the Israelis have agreed to suspend hostilities for the time being.
（アラブとイスラエルはしばらく休戦することにした）
 
suspend hostilities に対し「開戦する」は open hostilities で、常に複数形で所有格も使いません。
