英語類義語活用辞典の解説
この二語のもとになる名詞はもちろんclassicです。しかしこれが形容詞のclassicになると、classicalとは明確に違う意味が出てきます。
その違いを明確にするには、類義語を考えてみます。
classicの類義語には、standard、typical、vintageなどがあり、定着して標準化したもの、典型的、代表的といったものを指します。
古典やmasterpieceとは、第一義的には関係ありません。
That’s the classic reply to the question.
（その質問には誰でもそう答える）
This piece is a classic Fujita.
（これはフジタ画伯の代表作品のひとつです）
一方classicalは名詞のclassicと直接関係を持つ形容詞で、主に次の二つの意味に用いられます。
1 古典に関するもの、または問題の時点より以前を指す場合
2 ギリシャ・ローマの歴史的研究作品を意味する場合
1の例文です。
The significance of Keynisianism is most apparent when it is compared with pre-Keynesian views; Keynes himself spoke of the ‘classical‘ theory.
（ケインズの経済理論の意義は、ケインズ以前の経済理論と比較すると最も明瞭になる。ケインズ自身’classical’理論という言葉を使っている）
つまりケインズのいった’classical’とは自分より以前の経済理論（pre-Keynesian view）に当たるというわけです。
2の例文です。
Ulysses is supposed to be Tennyson’s best known classical poem.
（ユリシーズはギリシャ・ローマの古典を題材にしたテニソンの一連の詩の中でも最も有名なものである）
この例文をこちらと比較してみて下さい。
Ulysses is supposed to be the best of the Tennyson classics.
（ユリシーズはテニソンの傑作の中でも最高だと評価されている）
これと比べると、先の’classical’が漠然としたmasterpieceの意味でなく、文学的なオリエンテーションを指していることがわかります。
