まねる
imitate
あるものを手本として従おうとする。（同じものになる保証はない）
copy
できるだけ正確にまねる。
mimic
人の身振り・声・癖などを通例人を面白がらせるために正確にまねる。
mock
滑稽なことを言ったりしぐさをまねたりして人を笑い物にする。
ape
人をからかうため、または競争心から、人の言葉やしぐさをまねる。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
原則として imitate は人間の心を通した複製で、copy は機械的な模写です。
しかし実際の用法はこれほど明確に区別されているわけではなく、 copy が imitate と同じように使われるケースはたくさんあります。
I try to imitate/copy the style of my favorite columnist whenever I can.
（好きなコラムニストの文体をできるだけ真似るようにしています）
意識的に真似る場合はcopyをimitateと同じように使って問題ありません。imitateは無意識的に模倣する場合があるからです。
I often find myself imitating the way of my late mother’s speech, especially when greeting people.
（亡くなった母のしゃべり方、特に挨拶の仕方を無意識に真似ていることがあります）
上の例ではcopyは使いません。
copyとimitateがそれぞれ入れ替えできない例を以下にまとめます。
