英語類義語活用辞典の解説

hustleとhassleは見た目や発音が似ていますが、意味には違いがあります。
 
日本語の”ハッスル（死語かもしれませんが）”はhustleで、アメリカのスラング「頑張って何かをする」の意味と合致しています。
 
I hustled history.
（歴史を猛勉強した）
 
He hustled himself a job.
（彼は頑張って仕事を見つけた）
 
しかし米語でhustleはこういう意味ばかりではありません。本来はpush、shove、jostleの意味で、他人を押しのける、突き飛ばす、強引に進めるといったことを表します。
 
これから発展して「相手を脅して自分の望むものを手に入れる」も意味するようになりました。
 
A salesman is instructed not to hustle customers.
（セールスマンはお客に強要してはいけないと教わる）
 
The hoodlum made a round of lover’s lanes and hustled the occupants of parked cars.
（カップルが立ち寄りそうな場所をごろつきが徘徊し、駐車している車にいる人たちから金品を恐喝した）
 
hassleは相手と口論することです。hustleと違い、インチキな方法で何かをせしめるといった含みはありません。
 

 
意見の相違から派手なケンカになることで、別の語ではdispute、squabble、argueなどにあたります。
 
A hassle between two coaches touched off the riot.
（コーチ同士の喧嘩が暴動にまで発展した）
 
hastleは見た目でわかるケンカや争いであり、インチキな手口などは含まれません。それがあるのはhustleです。
 
We hassled about money,
（お金のことで口論になった）
 
上の例でhustleは使いません。
 
hustleはダマす相手を目的語にします。
 
They hustled old men.
（彼らは高齢者からお金を騙し取った）
 
hustlerは「イカサマ師」ですが、hasslerという言葉はありません。
