calmはこれらの中で最も一般的、日常的に使われ、「平静を保つことが困難な状況で冷静でいること」の含みがあります。

2のcalmは現代語のcoolと完全に入れ替えられ、brazenと同じ意味です。
 
tranquilはcalmのように周囲の事情に流されない平静さというより、理由を問わず一切の動揺から解放された穏やかさに焦点があります。
 
またcalmが一時的なものであるのに対し、tranquilはある程度長続きのする平和、平穏を暗示します。

tranquilityより精神的な清澄を意味し、俗念から解放された高僧の心境といったものに近くなります。

placidの場合は刺激に対する反応が鈍いゆえの穏やかさを意味します。感受性が鈍いために感情の起伏がなく平穏、というわけです。
