英語類義語活用辞典の解説

idleとlazyどちらも「怠け者」の意味ですが、原義には大きな違いがあります。
 
idleは、人間でも物でも稼動しない状態にあり、それも人間の場合は本人の意志とは無関係にそうなっていることを指します。
 
Business recession has hit America’s automobile industry. In Detroit, 29,000 workers are idle.
（米国の自動車業界は不況に襲われ、デトロイトでは2万9千人が職を失っている）
 
The firm is being managed poorly; too much funds are lying idle.
（あの会社はマネジメントがなってない。遊んでいる資金が多すぎる）
 
上の二つのidleをlazyと入れ替えはできません。
 
idleは事・物にも抽象概念にも使えます。主として「実体が無く空疎な行動、事態」を表します。
 
It is idle to say that a man is superior to a womnan or a woman to a man.
（男女の優劣を云々しても意味がない）
 
It is an idle talk.
（それはとりとめのない話です）
 
It is an idle rumor.
（それは根も葉もない噂です）
 
lazyとは自分の意志で怠けることです。
 
I am too lazy this morning to do anything.
（今朝は何もする気が起きない）
 
これを別の言い方をすれば I don’t feel like doing anything this morning. であり、自分の意志で怠けることになります。
 
そのためlazyは人間には使えますが事・物には使えません。（※管理人注：上のロングマンにはa lazy afternoon、a lazy riverといった用例があります）
 
「彼は怠け者だ」はHe is lazy.であり、He is idle.とはあまり言いません。これは「仕事に就いていない」状態であり、「怠け者」はHe is an idler. のほうが通用します。
