difficult
（課題など）高度の知力・熟練・勇気などを必要とする。
arduous
（登山・調査などが）困難で大変な努力を必要とする。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
hard には difficult に無い意味がたくさんあります。
「困難な、難しい」つまり easy の反対であるという一点に絞って違いを見てみます
He is a hard man.
と
He is a difficult man.
を比べると…
a hard manは人情に動かされない、一言で言うと「冷酷な男」になります。
対してa difficult manはa man difficult to deal withであり、「こちらの思うような反応を示さない男」つまり「つきあいにくい人物」を指します。
He makes it very hard for me.は「彼は私に意地悪をする」であり He makes me miserable.と同じような意味になります。
対して He is very difficult to get along with.は「彼は性格的につきあいにくい人物だ」の意味で、意地悪をするわけではありません。
He was a difficult child.だと「大人の思うように動かない子供」つまり stubborn child であり、この difficult を hardにするとおかしなことになります。
a hard childは「冷酷な子供」といった訳になりますが、人格がまだ固まっていない子供であれば変な表現になります。
