hard
成就・理解・解決などが難しい。
 
difficult
（課題など）高度の知力・熟練・勇気などを必要とする。
 
arduous
（登山・調査などが）困難で大変な努力を必要とする。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

hardにはdifficultに無い意味がたくさんあります。
 
「困難な、難しい」つまりeasyの反対であるという一点に絞って違いを見てみます
 
He is a hard man.
と
He is a difficult man.
 
を比べると…
 
a hard manは人情に動かされない、一言で言うと「冷酷な男」になります。
 
対してa difficult manはa man difficult to deal withであり、「こちらの思うような反応を示さない男」つまり「つきあいにくい人物」を指します。
 
He makes it very hard for me.は「彼は私に意地悪をする」でありHe makes me miserable.と同じような意味になります。
 
対してHe is very difficult to get along with.は「彼は性格的につきあいにくい人物だ」の意味で、意地悪をするわけではありません。
 
He was a difficult child.だと「大人の思うように動かない子供」つまりstubborn childであり、このdifficultをhardにするとおかしなことになります。
 
a hard childは「冷酷な子供」といった訳になりますが、人格がまだ固まっていない子供であれば変な表現になります。
