intelligent
知力が高く物事をよく考え理解することができる。
 
clever（英）smart（米）
物事を学び理解するのが早い。
 
alert
（よい意味で）注意深くすばやく考え行動する。
 
quick-witted
頭の回転が早い。
 
bright
特に子供が利口ではきはきしている。
 
knowing
鋭く抜け目がない（人の知らない情報を持っているという含意がある）。
 
brilliant
非常に頭がよい。





せいしん（精神）
intelligence
人や動物のすばやく理解し学習する能力。
 
intellect
精神の考える力。
 
mind
理知および意志の作用に重きを置いた心。
 
soul
しばしば死後も残ると考えられている人間の非肉体的な部分。
 
heart
愛情・勇気など感情的な面に重きを置いた心。
 
brain
（しばしば複数形で）intellect以上に知力を強調する。
 
spirit
soulとほぼ同じ意味で用いられることもあるが、soulはbodyとの対照として用いられることが多いのに対して、spiritは一切の物質的なものと対立する精神的なものを意味する。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

intelligentとintellectualはいずれも「知的な」といった訳が当てられますが、英語でこの2つは類義語ではありません。
 
intelligentのシノニムはbrightやclever、つまり頭の回転が速く、利口であることです。
 
対してintellectualのシノニムはmentalです。
 
intelligentは感情ではなく理性を使って、物事をすばやく理解し行動する能力です。知識や教養とは関係ない、原始的な知恵を指します。
 
The child is quite intelligent. He knows when to cry to get milk.
（その子は利口で、いつ泣けばミルクにありつけるかわかっている）
 
An intelligent dog can be taught easily to control sheep.
（利口な犬はすぐに牧羊犬に訓練できる）
 
intelligenceはintelligentの名詞形ですが、これは人間の知能という意味に加えて「諜報機関」も表します。この意味で形容詞として使う場合はintelligenceを使い、intelligentは使いません。

intellectualは物事に対して理詰めの態度をとることで、体験や感情の入る余地はありません。口語ではcerebralが当たります。
 
He had a tremendous intellectual sympathy for the poor and the oppressed.
（貧しい人や圧政に苦しむ人たちに対し、彼は強い同情の念を持っていた）
 
上の例文は、かつてロバート・ケネディ上院議員が兄のケネディ大統領を評した際のものです。
 
intellectualなsympathyなので、あえて正確さを出すなら「理念的な同情」とでも訳されます。これは体験からくる同情ではなく、ものの道理からくる同情です。
 
ケネディ上院議員は「自分と違って兄は感情的な人間ではない」と言いたかったのかもしれません。
 
His characters are real people, not an intellectual product.
（彼が生みだす登場人物は本物の人間で、架空の人物ではない）
