determine

1 to make a choice or judgment about（a course of action）, esp. in a way that ends uncertainity or disagreement
We’ve decided on Paris（＝that we will go to Paris）for our next holiday.
2 to cause to make a choice; make （somone）decide

determine
1 to（cause to）form a firm intention or decision
We determined to go at once.
2 to fix or find out exactly, e.g. by making calculations, collecting information, etc

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
decideとdetermineはいずれも「決める」ことを意味しますが、決定するまでの過程には違いがあります。
decideは問答無用の断固たる決定を暗示していて、決めるまでの議論やためらいを打ち切るためになされたもの、あるいはすでに打ち切られた後の状態を指します。
He decided to move next Monday.
（彼は来週の月曜に引っ越すことに決めた）
As the chairman of the Board he decided that his company cannot pass up the opportunity to benefit from the current currency value.
（彼は会長として、現在の貨幣価値から得られる利益を会社が見過ごすことはできないと考えた）
このdecideはconclude（結論に達する）の意味です。
これらの例でわかるように、decideは起こした行動に焦点があります。
対してdetermineは外から見える行動よりも、それに至る確信に焦点が当たっています。
The coroner’s jury tried to determine the time of his death.
（検視立ち会いの陪審間は男の死亡時刻を判定しようと試みた）
このdetermineは種々の資料から確証を得ようとする努力を暗示しています。
The court heard and determined the plea.
（法廷は被告人側の言い分を聞いた上で決定を下した）
法の権威による決定を下すまでにとる準備行動を踏まえた上でのdetermineです。これと同じことを言うのにdecideは使えません。
次の二つの例文をご覧ください。
１ When did you decide to be a painter？
２ When did you determine to be a painter？
いずれも「あなたはいつ画家になると決めたのですか？」と訳して問題ありませんが、こめられている意図には違いがあります。
１のdecideは単に画家になると決めたのはいつ？という、actionに重点があります。
対して２のdetermineは本人の心的確信、つまり決心に到達したのはいつだったのかを聞いています。
