親しい
close
愛情・利害の点で非常に近しい関係にある。
intimate
親しく付き合っていて気心がよくわかっている。（異性間に用いるときは性的な関係を暗示することがある）
familiar
絶えず交際しているので家族のように親しい。
friendly
友達として仲のよい関係を意味し、広い範囲で親しい間柄を示す最も一般的な語。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
intimate と close はいずれも近しい友情関係を表す言葉で、同時にその関係の性質を表す言葉でもあります。
intimate はかつては inseparable と同義で、親友を intimate friends としていましたが、現在は性的関係を暗示した仲を intimate friends または intimate としています。
そのため Are you intimate with her (him)?などと聞くのは不躾であり、法廷以外では非常識な質問です。
英語での friends は”心を許しあった仲”であり、夫婦なら intimate である以前にまず friends であるべきと考えます。
こうした心の友情を表す形容詞がcloseです。
Were you close to your brother?
（あなたはお兄さんとは仲が良かったですか？）
これは亡くなった身内の話をする時などによく聞かれる質問で、対して Yes, we were very close. といった答えをします。
この意図の質問で Were you intimate with your brother? と聞くことはありません。
心の結びつきを表す形容詞はcloseのほかに fast、firm、stanch があり、それぞれ friend や friendship を伴います。
