英語類義語活用辞典の解説

「含有する」意味で共通している二語は、どちらも使えるケースがあります。
 
The bill contains［includes］ several new clauses.

The nutshell includes[contains] the kernel.
（くるみの殻は種も含んでいる）
 
ただ contain には「対象をある枠内にとどめておく力（capability）を持つ」という含みがあります。

「枠内にとどめる」対象は自分自身、他の誰か、物質などいろいろあります。
