英語類義語活用辞典の解説

last final terminalはいずれも「最後」といった訳がつきますが、それぞれ入れ替えできないケースがあります。
 
lastはシリーズの最後に来るものを指しますが、シリーズそのものが終わるわけではありません。
 
That was the last page I read last night.
（ゆうべ私が読んだ最後のページがそれだった）
 
Don’t wait until the last minute befor filing your report. It may not get there in time.
（締め切りギリギリまでリポート提出を遅らせてはいけない。何かの手違いで先方に着くのが間に合わないかもしれない）
 
finalはlastと違い、シリーズも終わってしまい、決定的な強い響きを持っています。
 
This is final；you’ll get no further notice.
（これが最終通告です。これ以上のお知らせは致しません）
 
terminalは病気、事態の展開など、現象的に誰が見ても最後の期間にさしかかったことを告げる言葉で、finalやlastと替えることはできません。
 
finalと入れ替えると、あたかも終わりを知っている印象を与えるので誤解のもとになります。
