タイプ
kind
特定の種類。
sort
ある点で似ている人や物の類（kindとほぼ同義だがしばしば軽蔑）
type
明確な特徴を共有している人や物の類。
class
共通の特徴や性質を持ったものの集まりで、優劣などの価値判断を伴って用いることがある語。

2 the qualities that make something what it is, and different from others; nature

kindとsortは区別なしに使われる場合が多いですが、kindはsortよりもフォーマルで上品な感じの言葉で、主観性も少なめです。
対してsortはエゴが感じられる、独断的な語です。
まずはkindとsortが入れ替えできるケースを紹介します。
It takes all sorts（kind） to make a world go round.
（いろんな人がいて世界は成り立っている）
I had a kind（sort）of feeling I might run into him.
（彼に出くわすような気がしていた）
It’s the sort（kind）of work I prefer to a clerical job.

kindしか使えない例です。
If you are attacked in any sense, you’ll retaliate in kind.

sortは慣用的に使われることがあり、主に否定的な感情や疑惑を表します。
That’s a wrong sort of people for you to go around with.
（ああいう人たちとは付き合わないほうがいい）
