margin
1 an area down the side of a page near the edge, where there is no writing or printing

fringe
1 a decorative edge of hanging threads on a curtain, tablecloth, garment, etc.

英語類義語活用辞典の解説
marginとfringeはいずれも「端っこ」を意味し、中央の主体を取り巻くイメージです。
その取り巻き方に違いがあり、marginは何も記されていないブランク、つまり余白で囲みます。
対してfringeは装飾を施し、そこが端であることを示すのが原意です。
marginは余白の大きさを主題にする際にも使われ、これはfringeにはない用法です。
He won by a landslide margin.
（彼は大差で勝利した）
There is a wide margin between the two dealers’ prices.
（2人の業者の言い値には大きな差があった）
上の2例のmarginをfringeに替えることはできません。
fringeは、中央に存在するものに対して”無力な端っこ”の意味もあります。
As a working political reporter in Washington, I was on the fringe of President Kennedy’s Camelot.
（私はワシントンの政治記者として、ケネディ大統領時代に関わる者の端くれだった）
このfringeはmarginにはできません。
