loadとburdenはいずれも重い荷物を担うことで、比喩的にも使われます。
意味は似ていますが、言葉の性格には以下のような違いがあります。
loadはsomething to be carried（重い荷物）
burdenはsomething to be borne（耐え忍ばねばならない重荷）
burdenは「耐え忍ぶ」のほうにウェイトがあります。そのためしばしば比喩的に用いられます。
対してloadはburdenよりもはるかにビジネスライクな言葉です。
