英語類義語活用辞典の解説

この2つは、厳しい対処が予想される状況で、一般の基準より緩やかな態度に出ることを言います。
 
lenientはtolerantより無色な言葉で、対象にはオフィシャルな距離があります。またtolerantよりも、高い位置からものを言う言葉で、「寛容な態度で罰則に臨む」という含みがあります。
 
ただし、その寛容さは称賛されるものとは限りません。
 
The verdict was extremely lenient.
（判決は非常に寛大なものだった）※これは称賛している例
