effectiveとeffectualはいずれも実行の助けになることを指しますが、意味には微妙な違いがあります。
 
特にeffectiveと言うべきところをeffectualとは言えないケースがほとんどです。
 
effectiveはeffectualより具体性が強く、意図する効果を重視しているからです。

effectualがeffectiveと違うのは、能力そのものが焦点で、「実力がある」という、やや抽象的な一般論であることです。
 
元来effectualはeffectfulと同義で、「効果に満ちた」つまり「有用な、役に立つ」という意味です。
