英語類義語活用辞典の解説
estimate assess appraise はいずれも”見積もり”することですが、同じように使えないこともあります。
estimate は非専門語で、日常誰でも使う一般的な見積もりを指します。極端な正確性は要求されません。
We asked the carpenter to make a rough estimate of how long it will take to build a small additional room to the house.
（私たちは、小さな部屋を建て増すのにどれくらいの期間が必要か、簡単に見積もって欲しいと大工に頼んだ）
The carpenter estimated that it would take him just about three days.
（大工は三日ほどかかるとふんだ）
assess と appraise は、正式の担当役人か、プロによる見積もりを意味する点は同じです。
違うのは appraise が抽象性の強い、大きな言葉であるのに対し、 assess は具体的な数字を出す点です。
My house has been assessed at ＄50.000.
assess は課税のために財産などの値踏みをするだけでなく、実際に課税することもいいます。
This year’s tax to be assessed on all retail sales was announced yesterday.
（小売業への今年の課税割合が昨日発表された）
assess には analyze（分析する）の意味もあります。
She soberly assessed her own work for elements of originality, if any.
（彼女は自分の仕事にオリジナリティがあるかどうか、醒めた目で分析してみた）
appraise は appraiser（査定官）によって査定され、査定文書で示される。その額については、とやかく言えません。
appraise は”オフィシャルな査定”という含みがあるので、一般的には assess のほうが多く使われます。
