journey
ある場所への比較的長い旅行。（帰路は含意しない）
 
trip
ある場所への観光またはビジネスの旅行（一般的な語）
 
tour
周遊して出発点に戻る旅行で、観光・視察などの目的のもの。
 
travel
行先や帰路よりも移動に重点を置く語（動詞としては一般的だが、名詞としては修飾語句を伴ったり、複合語として用いられるのが普通）。travelsと複数形になると、かなり長い旅行を意味する。
 
excursion
集団で行くレクリエーションなどのための短い旅行。
 
voyage
通例長い船旅。

英語類義語活用辞典の解説

journey は日本語の「旅」にあたり、trip は「旅行」です。
 
journey は trip と比べると、ぼんやりと一般的な旅、それも陸の旅のことです。（海の旅は voyage です）
 
「人生の旅」は英語でも life’s journey で、life’s trip や life’s travel とは言いません。
 
trip と journey のもう一つの違いは、trip は出発点に戻ってくる前提があることです。
 
Last fall, she went on a Europe trip.
（去年の秋、彼女はヨーロッパ旅行をした）
 
tour は修学旅行のようにいくつか予定の地点を見て回ることに重点があります。
 
なので上の She went on a European trip. を She went on a tour of Europe. になると「ヨーロッパ見学旅行をした」、つまり「ヨーロッパで見るべき場所を見てきた」となります。
 
これは必ずしも観光旅行というわけではなく、専門家として見るべき場所を見る場合もあります。
 
The detective made a quick tour of all the local bars.
（探偵は聞き込みのため、全ての地元の酒場を短時間で回った）
 
上の tour を trip にすると、酒場を訪れるのが情報収集かどうかがはっきりしなくなります。単にお酒が好きで通っていた可能性も出るのです。

tripは米語では幻覚的な、楽しい経験の意にも使います。
 
His new novel game me a good trip.
（彼の新作はとても面白かった）
 
travelはある場所から別の場所へ移動する動きに重点があり、tripのように出発点に戻る前提はありません。”期間”の長短とも無関係です。
