英語類義語活用辞典の解説
envious と jealous は、他人が何かを所有することに反感を持つ点は共通していますが、両者は本質的に異なっています。
日本語の「妬ましい」という含みだけでは解釈を間違うこともあるので注意が必要です。
jealous はライバル意識の強い言葉で、「その人間さえいなければ自分のものになっていたのに」という感情です。
He is jealous of his wife’s childhood sweetheart George.
（彼は、自分の妻の幼馴染みのジョージに嫉妬している）
jealous には自分の所有物に高い価値を見出し、それを失うまいと精魂を傾けることという意味もあります。enviousにはこの用法はありません。
Japan’s Samurai was extremely jealous of his honor.
（日本のサムライは、名誉を非常に重んじた）
envious の派生元である動詞 envy は、他人の所有物、主として富や才能に対する羨望の念を言います。
George had always been envious of the sweet pen Richard had, and pretended not to notice it.
（ジョージはリチャードの文筆の才能を常に妬んでいて、それに気づかないふりをしていた）
envious はごく気軽な会話表現としても使われます。
We were all envious of your beautiful dress at the party.
