英語類義語活用辞典の解説
era period epoch age のうち、period 以外は全て歴史的時代の用語です。 era と age は長い年代でほぼ同じように使います。 era はやや格式ばっています。
We are talking about 200 years before the Christian era.
（西暦になる200年前の話です）
ageは最も一般的で、時代的特徴を総称する言葉です。
Those are the relics of the Stone Age.
（それらは石器時代の遺物です）
Ours is the age of anxiety.
（現代は不安定な時代だ）
上の例文のageをeraとは入れ替えられません。ageはeraよりも時代の枠組みが大雑把だからです。自分で勝手にそう名付けていることもあります。
epochは期間的に最も短く、常にあるeventによって決定される歴史上の一時期です。これは個人の一生の一時期にも使えます。
That was an epoch-making event in my life.
（それは私の人生での一大事だった）
periodは期間の長短や私的、公的を問わずいずれにも使います。
I did a few stints for a period.
（私は一時期、サラリーマンとして2、3の会社で働いていた）
