英語類義語活用辞典の解説
最も広い意味を持つのはcommerceで、tradeとbusinessの総称です。
しかし格調が高く抽象的なため、実際には国家レベルの通商の意味に使われる程度で、頻繁に使われるわけではありません。
French commerce is somewhat improving lately.
（フランスとの通商はやや上向きになってきた）
tradeとbusinessは、米語では入れ替えができますが、tradeは交易の内容にウェイトがあります。
”What trade are you in？” ”I’m in construction.”
（「お仕事は何を？」「土木建築です」）
tradeは英国と米国でニュアンスが違います。
英国ではかつて”He is in trde”とはやや下に見る表現でした。米国では代わりに”in business”を使い、これは英国とは違って立派な社会的地位を意味します。
英国でbusinessmanの替わりに使われるtradesmanも低い感覚の言葉でした。
ちなみにroaring tradeは英国英語で商売繫盛を意味し、米語のrushing businessに当たります。
industryは商取引ではなく品物の生産を意味し、製造・加工を含む全体の総称です。中小企業からいわゆる知的産業まで何でもOKです。

The increasing automation of industry is the primary cause of unemployment problem.
（機械による無人化の増加が失業問題の最も大きな原因だ）
