英語類義語活用辞典の解説

fast quick swift rapidはいずれも動きが速いことを表しますが、何に焦点が当たっているか、などの違いがあります。
 
fastは動く本体に注目していて、rapidは動きそのものの速さに焦点を当てています。
 
A fast horse is one capable of going at a rapid gait.
（速い馬とは速い歩調を出せる馬である）
 
A car is needed when you want to get somewhere fast.
（速くどこかに行きたいなら車が必要だ）
 
上の例文ではfastの代わりにrapidlyは普通使いません。rapidlyは動きそのものの速さを言うからです。
 
例：a rapid stream（急流）
 

 
quickは物事に対する反応が素早いこと、仕事に着手するのが早い、仕事が完遂するまでが早い、といった場合に使います。
 
There was a quick response to my question.
（質問したらすぐに反応があった）
 
He is slow to resolve but quick in performance.
（彼は決断に時間がかかるが、一旦取り掛かったら仕事は速い）
 
swiftはほとんど目にもとまらぬ速さで目的を完了させることに使います。
 
She shot a swift smile toward him in that instant.
（その一瞬、彼女は彼に笑顔を見せた）
 
上のa swift smileの代わりにa fast smileとは言いません。
 
fastとquickが純アングロ・サクソン語で口語的であるのに対し、rapidもswifはやや改まった、ものものしい言葉です。
 

 
rapidとswiftは常に肯定的で、よい意味のスピードに使います。病気見舞いの花などに添えるコードにはhoping for your rapid（speedy）recoveryと書きます。
 
She is a rapid typist.
（彼女はタイピングがとんでもなく速い）
 
この場合のタイピストはタイプを打つ人のことで、She is a rapid speaker.（彼女は早口で話す）と同様に必ずしも職業的タイピストを指すわけではありません。
 
fastとquickは良い意味にも悪い意味にも使います。
 
He is a fast runner.
（彼は駿足だ）
 
The country is declining fast.
（あの国はすごい勢いで衰退している）
 
He answered my letter quickly.
（彼は私の手紙にすぐ返事をくれた）
 
She made a quick retort to her mother who reproached her for beign lazy.

fastとswiftは使い方が似ていますが、fastは主観的にとにかく急ぐ（breakneckともいいます）ことであるのに対し、swiftは第三者が見て速いことを指します。
