英語類義語活用辞典の解説

depressedとdistressedはいずれも気分が落ちこんでいる状態ですが、違いはあります。
 
対義語や類義語を考えるとその違いがわかりやすくなります。
 
depressedは気分が滅入ることで、feeling lowとも言い替えられ、対義語はcheerfulです。
 
日本語で言う「落ち込む」であり、鬱状態にあるともいえます。その原因は外部よりも本人にある場合が多く、気分の問題です。
 
ditressedは苦悩する状態のことで、agonizedやdeeply troubledが類義語になります。
 
distressedには悩みの原因が存在し、depressedのように主観的な気分の問題ではありません。
 
She was distressed over the decision she had to make, since there was no getting away from it.
（彼女はのっぴきならない立場で、決断を下さなくてはならないことは彼女を苦悩させた）
 
Ship in distressは難破した船のことで、distress call（signal）はSOSのことです。
 
distressedは困窮状態も表し、
 
They were in distressed（reduced）circumstances.
（彼らはひどく困窮していた）
 
といった使い方をします。
 
distressにはfeel painつまり「心の痛みをおぼえる」の意味もあり、以下のような使われ方をします。
